I have a quick question on these types of problems involving electrochemistry. When given the Ecell of two 1/2 reactions, how do you go about determining whether to flip the sign of one as opposed to the other. These problems are giving me fits...
Thanks in advance! |

Your objective with these problems is to end up with the highest positive Eo value: that's it, that's all.
For example, if there is a reduction potential table and the Eo values are 3 and 2. The equation with Eo = 3 will occur as written because it has the highest value and the other equation will be switched so that that half cell has Eo = -2.
Keep in mind: positive Eo values for a cell suggests that the reaction would proceed spontaneously as written. |
