#32- the answer seems contradictory to the information in the passage and the explaination.
The answer quoted - increased carbon dioxide concentrations, warmer climates and less precipitation.[x]
The explaination - The answer to this question can be deduced from the following: "Thus with decreased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere there will be colder climates and greater precipitation." ; "The combustion of fossil fuels in 1954 added 6 billion tons of carbon dioxide gas to the atmosphere, and the amount is doubling every ten years..." |

I had a problem with this one as well.
Would any admins kindly explain why the answer is the way it is? Because it is blatantly contradicted in paragraph 7.
thank you |

I do not see how paragraph 7 contradicts answer choice A. Paragraph 7 supports the answer:
- "desired situation of greater precipitation with cooler climates and lesser precipitation with warmer climates."
- "It is pointed out that with a lesser amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere the upper surface of a cloud loses heat energy faster to space and is cooler."
The quote in the explanation "Thus with decreased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere there will be colder climates and greater precipitation" means the same thing as increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will result in warmer climates and less precipitation..
After reading these quotes you can eliminate options B and C.
In order to choose from options A and D, you must use your general knowledge: humans pollute and create higher levels of carbon dioxide every year. (This is also noted in the text "Man has recently added a new factor and upset the balance. The combustion of fossil fuels in 1954 added 6 billion tons of carbon dioxide gas to the atmosphere, and the amount is doubling every ten years").
From this you know that the answer must be A. |
