i see how its stated that quasars are traveling away BUT in no way do I see how that equates to them expanding...i understand the explanation the answer gives BUT how can you make that sort of inference if it is not specified in the passage?

thanks

Yeah, I agree... this was a tough one.

The only reason I really knew this answer was because I just bought a telescope... and an astronomy magazine haha. (I highly suggest getting one! haha)

The only info in the passage that helps is:

1. quasars are on the very edges of the universe
2. they are traveling AWAY

from there it's a educated guess as to the correct answer Smile

I gave it a careful thought and concluded that the passage did not give enough information for me to conclude that the unverse is expanding.

The passage gave two clues:
quasars are receding from earth
quasars are located at the farthest reach of universe

With this information, the answer explanation distorts and argues that quasars are located at the outermost part of the universe, which assumes that the universe is bound, which is clearly not stated in the passage.

quasars receding from the earth and the universe expanding is also not clear. The universe might be so big that even thought the universe itself might not be expanding, the quasars could still be moving away from earth within the huge universe.

I believe the answer should be none of the above.

If anything has a "farthest reach", doesn't that mean that it must be bound?
