I know, you're probably getting annoyed with me again, but I have another question, and I'm posting them all in different topics now.

I understand why C is correct, but I don't understand why D is false. In the next paragraph, it reads: President Gorbachev had straightforwardly appealed for Western economic aid in the crises he faces, like any Third World leader...

This indicates to me that he was seen as a third world leader, by the middle eastern states at least, and since he wasn't able to stop Western military action in the Middle East, it sort of confirms D in my mind, if that makes sense. Perhaps you could explain it better?

Don't ever worry about asking questions! We both want the same thing: for you to succeed.

This is a tough question: very much a "best answer" kind of question. You can expect one or two of these per test, not more. As I'm sure you can see, answer choice C is clearly wrong. Answer choice D certainly brings to mind what the author stated about Gorbachev asking for economic aid like a leader of a developing nation. So with respect to financial aid, yes, he is viewed like a leader of a developing nation but the question refers to influence.

But what can we determine from the passage in terms of Gorbachev's influence?

This is less clear. The author does mention the "minor role the Soviet Union has been forced to play in the Middle East." It is unlikely that the leader of a developing nation would be able to play any role at all in the Middle East.
