In passage #1, can you please explain what the "ghosts" are? My interpretation is that they are just a membrane which can be sealed or unsealed, but if so, why are they called "ghosts"? Thank you![/img]

A normal red blood cell in humans lacks a nucleus and many organelles including mitochondria. In top of that, these "ghosts" have lost their intracellular proteins (due to being permeable in a hypotonic medium). So they end up being "empty cells" or just ghosts of what a real cell should be.
