I have been looking over the answers and I do not see why the answer for #31 is A, that the films were effective in eliciting emotional responses.
Why is the answer not B, "although visually ambitious, the films were too confusing." The author makes point to say how confusing the films are.

When I was debating btwn the two answer choices the word "too" got me. When you say something is "too confusing" it has a negative connotation to it. The author doesn't have a negative view on avant-garde films, but just characterizes it as confusing, and, furthermore, it is meant to be so. On the other other, being confused or put in discomfort is an emotional response which is what they are going for, so A was more appropriate to me.
