in the explanation for this answer they use the kinetic energy equation

1/2 mv2
saying mass = 1.2 Kg..

i was just wondering where did they get 1.2 kg? If that number was taken from the passage.. why was it taken because according to me it seems like 2 unrelated questions?

Thanks

Given the context of the initial instructions for each section of the new MCAT, all questions which are preceded by a passage are assumed to be based on the passage unless explicitly stated otherwise. Thus the 1.2 kg is from the passage.

First off, I think there are passages that have one or two unrelated questions to the passage, so it may not be unusual to assume that this was a semi-discrete question.

I also found this question really confusing, more particularly because of the words "electrical source" and "particle". At that point, even though I knew to use the formula: mv2/2, i was thinking of the mass of an electron.

The passage talks of a mass of 1.2kg, but the question talks of a particle...quite confusing...but what can we do?

"Particle" is not often used to identify a "mass" so I will have them clarify this question stem.
