You gave the example of a pH range from 3 to 4:

4 - 3 = 1

That is a range of 1 unit so the exponent of 10 is 1 thus 10 fold.

A range of 2 units would be, for example, pH of 3 to 5:

5 - 3 = 2

This is a range of 2 units so the exponent of 10 is 2 thus 100 fold.
