Like the question about the U-boat, this seems to be informed by misunderstanding the passage and the subject matter under discussion. What is interesting in this case is how the question writer's impression of the passage gets translated into a system of jargon which is not privy to another reader.
Musically, the terms "layered", "depth", and "density" as used here are quite meaningless. It can be just as easily argued that polyphony is "layered" because it is composed of more than one melody at the same time ("horizontally" in the passage has more to do with the way each melody relates to itself than with the overall structure), and that homophony has less "depth" because it has only the one melody, albeit harmonised.
The definition of density in the explanation reads like what Sokal was talking about, except in reverse. |
