Maybe the answer can be revised to read "removal of an acidic proton"? No organic chemist will ever call that alpha hydrogen an acid.

Interesting comment. I also would not call a compound an acid just because it had an alpha hydrogen. However, if a compound had donated (past tense) a hydrogen, then would you not say that in that reaction it had acted as an acid?
