Wouldn't x-ray radiation to bone marrow and lymph tissues harm the tissue?
22) Tissue transplantation is a technique which also can stimulate an immune response in recipients. Several methods are used to prevent rejection. These might include all but which of the following?
1. Exposure of the tissue to be transplanted to X-irradiation to prevent infection from occurring.
2. Exposure of bone marrow and lymph tissues to X-irradiation.
3. Immunosuppression.
4. Tissue matching.
INCORRECT:
Your Answer: B
Correct Answer: A
Explanation Discuss this question
deduce
Rejection will occur when the recipient produces antibodies against foreign antigens present in the tissue of the donor. Tissue matching, which would ensure that the antigens present in the tissue match those of the recipient would decrease the likelihood of an immune response (this is analogous to matching blood types for donation). A second method would consist of decreasing the immune response by suppression of the system. This is accomplished with medications or by X-irradiation of the B-cells, which produce the antibodies, located mainly in the bone marrow and lymph tissues. Answer choice A. would damage the tissues to be transplanted, which would not decrease the chances of rejection. |

Yes, definitely. But that is exactly the point. Some steroids, for example, can medically suppress the immune system. Likewise, destroying immune cells and their precursors in the bone marrow will suppress immunity. Whether immunosuppression in done medically or with radiation, the risks are serious but the dosage is regulated as to try to give maximum benefit with minimum side effects.
Answer choice A does nothing to suppress the immune response in the host. |
