Hi,
I chose alcoholic fermentation. Is this answer wrong because it's "alcoholic"? I reasoned that it was fermentation because when we over-use our muscles we are sore because of the "lactic acid". So, since it's ALCOHOLIC the answer is wrong?
Thanks! |

yeah, only in fungi and bacteria is there alcoholic fermentation. in humans its lactic acid fermentation. additionally, I would have still put glycolysis even if choice C was lactic acid fermentation.
Why?
Because to get lactic acid you have to reduce pyruvate. Pyruvate is formed by the PROCESS of glycolysis. So if the question asked what is the main product that builds up in rapidly contracting muscles, only then would i put lactic acid.
What do you think?
As an interesting side note, lactic acid build up does not necessarily cause the 'burn'. Its actually due to the decrease pH that is a result of lactic acid, which causes muscle fatigue. And, if you consider how this relates to the bohr effect, its pretty neat. Ie: increase [H] causes more O2 dissociation (along with increased [CO2]) |
