Alright, I understand this amino acid needs to be hydrophillic to be soluable in water. Amino acids are also amphoteric. I i get that.

My question is amino acids are BOTH:

amphoteric and amphipathic correct?

ie (they can act as acids or bases, and they have hydrophobic and hydrophillic ends)

Thanks in advance!

Not all amino acids are amphipathic (both hydrophobic and hydrophilic). What determines whether an amino acid is water soluble is its R group (side chain).

For example, Phenylalanine (because of the ring) and isoleucine (because of its large carbon chain) are hydrophobic, but aspartate (because of its carboxyl group) and serine (because of its OH group) are hydrophilic.
