Anyways, for this question, the reason for picking D over C is stupid. "The question uses the word "initial." One of the initial steps in protein synthesis is the transcription of a gene to produce mRNA which is then translated within a ribosome to produce a protein (BIO 3.0)."

The sole reason D is better than C is because of the word "initial" in the question stem. Are you kidding me?

This question is about picking the BEST answer; which one happens first?
Answer choice C occurs after D, because option C talks about ribosomal activity which is, as you know, translation.

On the other hand, answer choice D talks about transcription levels.
This should be obvious to you that transcription occurs before translation, making and answer choice D better than C.

The word "initial" in the question stem doesn't make much difference between choice C and D, in my opinion.

The passage states that "Ibogaine affects the cell at the level of protein synthesis"-- which would be translation. Based on this, I selected choice C, since it refers to translation.

However, the reason I think D is a better answer than C is because D refers specifically to the dopamine transporter gene, whereas C is referring rather generally to increasing ribosomal activity. If ribosomal activity is increased, this won't necessarily increase the number of dopamine transporters, since you also need a corresponding increase in the mRNA which codes for the transporter. Choice D increases the amount of mRNA that codes for the transporter, and thus will increase the number of dopamine transporters that will ultimately be transcribed.

Please look at the Explanation in the Exam, to understand why choice D is a better choice than choice C.
