| One of the answers to this question is a little bit unclear to me... wouldn't the placenta have to break before oxytocin is produced... something has to trigger oxytocin first. |

| The placenta does not break. You are thinking of the amniotic sac (bag of waters), which ruptures prior to birth. It can be ruptured (amniotomy) artificially in order to induce labor. It is related to the hormone oxytocin since once the amniotic sac is broken it will make the body trigger release of prostaglandins and oxytocin which help in inducing labor. |
