where does the ratio 4/5 come from?
if x=amplitude then that number should be 0.4
thank you

The amplitude is 0.8 m (4/5) since the passage describes this is the value obtained by stretching. In other words, the string was simply "hanging" downward (equilibrium position) and then stretched to a maximum (amplitude) of 0.8 m.

Why wouldn't x be 2m since its the full length of the string? I thought when it asked for the PE before the mass was released the value would be 2 m.

thanks.

You only include the distance from equilibrium position in the x term.

My question is why the stretching distance caused by the force of gravity was not taken into account. I assumed that the .8m the string was stretched was in addition to the stretching caused by the weight of the mass pulling it down. Can anyone explain why this isn't a factor?
