This answer is wrong.

The equilibrium position is the position caused by the force of stand itself on the spring (F=mg). This is now Xeq.

When the 700N weight and the weight of the platform is calculated you get a distance of 6.7m. This 6.7m is the distance from an unstretch spring, however, the equilibrium position of the spring will ALWAYS have the stand on it. Thus, the distance FROM the equilibrium position is only 4.7m (6.7-2).

I have seen this problem applied in MANY places (such as Physics Forums, Kaplan and Examkrackers) to a hanging mass attached to a spring. The equilibrium position is the position caused by mg.
