Why wouldn't this answer be A? Being nurtured is like being nurtured from the environment... Also, there's no mention of "complex forms" or anything of complexity..

Hi!
When choosing the correct answer in a verbal reasoning test, it is important to always consider the choice that provides an answer that's within the context of the passage.
While you do have a point in saying that "being nurtured is like being nurtured from the environment", this is not how the author of the passage discussed the comparison between an embryo and a budding artist.
The explanation in the answer key clearly justifies why the correct answer is B:
Answer choice B. is correct because the simile begins with: "Just as an embryo retraces much of its evolutionary past, so the artist reinvents the first stages of art."
Indeed, there is no direct mention of complex forms in the passage. However, complexity in form is implied by certain "stages" of development found in the succeeding sentence: Even children's art is subject to the taste and outlook of the society that SHAPES his or her personality... Shape/shaping implies evolution or development into a more complex form.
Again, the following advice in the explanation is very important to remember when doing the test: As long as you remain focused on the question - looking for that which is similar between X and Y - then you can't be tricked!
Always stay focused on what the question is asking for and on the answer that sticks within the context of the passage.

The fact that society SHAPES his/her personality.. isn't that in its own a cultural force? Shouldn't the answer be C? I feel that cultural reference related to the budding artist can be better inferred form the passage than "evolution into complex forms" where complex forms are never discussed. |

C. is false because an embryo is hardly influenced by cultural forces.
You do have a point in saying that the budding artist is associated with cultural references in the passage. However, the question requires finding a similarity that is true for both the budding artist and the embryo. C is only true or applicable to the budding artist, but not to the embryo.
