Perhaps "afflicted" for "inflicted" in the question?

I believe the word "inflicted" is right and should not be changed. Here are the definitions:

Inflicted: negatively imposed (i.e. an annoyance)

Afflicted: mentally or physically unfit, distressed

That would be the definition of the words as verbal adjectives. It's being used as a verb in the question. You inflict damage on something. A harmful thing afflicts something.
