What do you mean by thermodynamically stable states?
Is III wrong because delta H is positive? |

I hope that my explanation of Q18 will let you feel more comfortable with the expression Thermodynamically Stable State (if not, take a peek here: http://www.nyu.edu/classes/tuckerman/honors.chem/lectures/lecture_15/node9.html).
III is wrong because the reactants are not elements. In other words the reactants could be oxygen, magnesium or carbon but not in combination, only as separate elements (part of the definition of heat or enthalpy of formation). |
