I am having difficulty with a question in one of my text books:
A researcher wants to prepare a primary amine (RNH2). He uses an alkyl halide (RX) and ammonia to produce an alkyl ammonium halide salt (RNH3+ X-), which he then treats with sodium hydroxide to produce the primary amine. He finds that the product is always contaminated with a secondary amine (r2NH) and a tertiary amine (R3N). What has he done wrong and how can he produce only the primary amine he desires?
Thanks for your help!!! |
