| Can you please explain how you get the new velocity as 0.5/0.6 * 6? Thanks. |

To calculate the new velocity vf:
Conservation of Momentum
mv = (m + 0.1)vf
where v = 6 m/s is speed of mass m before collision, and vf the speed of the merged mass after collision, m = 0.5 kg (given in the passage).
thus vf = m (0.5/0.6) |

| I'm confused by this question and the one prior. Both involve springs and harmonic motion and both ask the same question, "what is the new max KE attained by the combined mass." Why is it, then, that for #30, mass is independent but for #31 mass is taken into account? |

#31 requires a little mind reading. There is no info in the question stem to assume that the additional mass that sticks to the moving mass was at rest. In the same way the question also doesn't say that it wass added on in a way of not disturbing the moving mass.
The question is just about knowing the formulas, if you can read the mind of the person who wrote the question. |

but still disappointed bc all the questions from this passage were calculation based.....sigh.... does gs know that mcat is mainly conceptual? |

| I THOUGHT MOMENTUM IS NOT CONSERVED IN OSCILLATION BECAUSE A NET EXTERNAL FORCE IS ACTING ON THE OBJECT...the velocity is changing....PLEASE EXPLAIN |
