Optical density refers to the material's (ie glass) absorbance or index of refraction. In order to have total internal reflection (which occurs at the critical angle, a favorite MCAT question!), the index of refraction n2 must be less than n1:
sine (theta)critical = n2 / n1
n2 < n1 since sine can never be > 1. |
