Hello! After getting 7's on VR, I was able to pull off a 9 on this. I think the secret was doing all the passages. I hope this test wasn't easier than others.

anyway, for #37, I was able to eliminate (2) and (3) but I don't know why (1) is the right answer. I chose (4) because the pasage said, "the death certificate giving the "usual" occupation and industry and the census schedule giving the "current" occupation and industry. This led to difficulties in interpretation of the resulting death rates. "

help please..

Sarah

37. It can be inferred from the passage that:

1. obtaining a particular piece of information from more than one source can lead to problems interpreting research findings. [x]
2. Kitagawa and Hauser are better researchers in the area of mortality than is Guralnick. [x]
3. research involving white males is inherently easier to conduct in a variety of areas of inquiry. [x]
4. information obtained from death certificates is not reliable for research into mortality. [x]

INCORRECT:

Correct Answer: A

It was good that you narrowed it down to answer choices A and D because they are both dealing with the same issue. Now it is a matter of interpretation.

Given the quote that you provided from the passage, here is my question to you: what led to "difficulties in interpretation of the resulting death rates"?

Was it just the fact that death certificates were used? (answer choice D)

Or, was it because both death certificates and census schedules were used? (answer choice A)

Here is the full quote:

"In the Guralnick study, information on occupations and industries was obtained from two sources ? the death certificate giving the "usual" occupation and industry and the census schedule giving the "current" occupation and industry. This led to difficulties in interpretation of the resulting death rates."

About your score, I wrote this in the General Discussion area but just in case you missed it (there is also a thread there where students compare their AAMC score to the one on the GS tests; generally student scores are higher on the AAMC so that should give you some confidence that you are on the right track!):

Your best option is quality practice (GS practice tests and AAMC tests) and to pour over your mistakes so it's clear how to improve.

There are 2 basic techniques to try to improve VR scores. You need to try both to see which works best for you. Either you follow the intuitive route: read the passage first, highlighting key words, and the answer the questions. Or you quickly read the questions to get an idea of what they are asking for, then you read the passage once while answering questions as you go along.

There is one basic concept you should keep in mind while reading the passage. Imagine that as soon as you are finished the passage, you will need to explain it to your favorite cousin who is a high school student, or, that you will have to present a summary of the passage in front of class. By visualizing the importance of getting "the main idea", it will help you sift through the passage and see the most important elements.

Hope that helps!
