We are looking for the best answer. We have to look for clues to suggest likely or logical scenarios.
The passage states that the reaction was "exceedingly" rapid (which is suggestive) but also the Explanation for this passage discusses a reaction which is clearly happy to proceed spontaneously due to the electronics/stability involved.
These are clues to suggest a reaction which is "favorable and thus more likely to occur" (one of the definitions of an exothermic reaction).
