| I don't understand the reasoning for the answer of C for number 37. Shouldn't the answer be D? since C-2 on the fischer projection is pointing to the right and C-3 is pointing to the left, then wouldn't it make sense that on the Hawthorne projection the C-2 would be pointing down and C-3 pointing up. The explanation states this, but the answer shows C-3 pointing down as well. I'm confused. Thanks. |

You've got the right idea, the problem is with your counting.
Look again at answer choice C. Look at the oxygen in the ring. Now clearly the oxygen cannot be counted as carbon-1 (C-1). So C-1 must be just to the right and below the oxygen (with a H above C-1 and an OH below it). Once you have established C-1, then the explanation follows: "-OH is down on C-2, and -OH is up on C-3".
