This question is mostly answered in the passage. Answer choice A contradicts P2 in the passage which states that "proteins have limited mobility" so "freely diffusable" would not be correct (for those of you who have advanced cell bio, yes, freely diffusable is possible but the answer is based on the passage or introductory level biology).

Answer choice C helps to explain how a peripheral protein (fibronectin is on the outside of the membrane, P3) can affect the inside of the cell.

I understand why A,B and D make no sense, but that doesn't make C a more lucid response. How does fibronectin mediate hormone responses? I chose D as integrin-ECM binding of some cells will increase the area over which they can spread and interact with other ligands.

5) The main effect of would be:
Your knowledge of receptors is clearly impressive, but it also clearly exceeds what the AAMC would expect of a student for this exam. The exam is considered to be at the introductory level university/college sciences.

You are correct to use the process of elimination for answer choices A, B and D. Answer choice C is not trying to point to fibronectin alone as the source of mediating a hormonal response, but rather “the transmembrane association of fibronectin with the cytoskeletal microfilaments”. This statement implies a receptor that can induce some sort of intracellular event.
